When floodwaters rose, one teen’s courage became a lifeline for strangers. The rain came down hard that Sunday in Boca Raton, Florida, one of those sudden storms that turns parking lots into rivers and streets into swirling tides. Eighteen-year-old Thomas Ruzzano and his girlfriend had just finished watching a movie at Mizner Park when the thunder rolled and the floodwaters began to rise.
“During the movie, we just heard lightning, pouring the whole movie,” Thomas said. “And then on the way out, we’re in a flood.”

The storm had dumped more than eight inches of rain in a short, fierce, and unexpected downpour. Cars sat stalled like stranded boats, water climbing higher with every passing minute. Most people stood frozen, unsure of what to do. But Thomas didn’t hesitate.
“I went from car to car,” he said. “I was making sure everyone was okay.”
He moved through knee-deep water, then waist-deep, knocking on fogged windows, helping frightened strangers climb out before the water could rise any higher. One by one, he pulled six, maybe seven people to safety, until someone shouted about an elderly man still trapped in his car.
The water had reached the man’s shoulders; his seatbelt jammed. Thomas and a few bystanders rushed over, yanking the door open and unbuckling the strap that held him prisoner.
“He was actually stuck in the car, and we had to help him out,” Thomas said. “He was a little lost in the whole situation, so we helped him. We just had to get him to safety, make sure he was okay.”
They guided the man through the murky water and into a nearby restaurant — shaken but alive.
Soon, others joined Thomas. A ripple of courage spread through that flooded parking lot as strangers waded in to help one another, passing out towels, steadying trembling hands, and checking on neighbors they’d never met. Compassion, the kind that still makes the world turn toward hope, was rising higher than the floodwaters.
“They were just very thankful,” Thomas said. “They kept telling me how lucky they were to have me there.”
Later, when the water finally began to recede, Thomas’ parents shared a video of their son being interviewed. The caption read simply, “Mom and Dad are so proud of you.”

And maybe that’s the miracle in this story, not just one young man’s bravery, but how one act of courage can awaken the good in others. In a world that feels divided, God still stirs hearts to step into the storm, to wade through chaos, and carry one another to safety.
Because love, like floodwater, moves fast. But unlike the flood, it leaves life instead of loss in its wake.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” Isaiah 43:2
