A Neighbor's Call Saves the Life of a Newborn Baby Whose Mom Had Passed Away

After a concerned woman hadn’t seen her neighbor, a new mom who gave birth just two weeks prior, she called the police. Her actions made all the difference in the world—her call saved the newborn baby.

In May, a woman who did not want her identity known had not seen her Phoenix, AZ, neighbor for five days. She says she was very close to her neighbor and that not seeing her for that long was unusual. Fearing something may have happened, the concerned woman called 911.

A Heroic Call Saves Newborn Baby

“We didn’t see her Saturday. We didn’t see her Sunday. You know, Sunday was Mother’s Day. Monday, Tuesday, we didn’t see her. We called on that Wednesday,” the woman said.

Body cam footage shows the police were able to look through a window, where they saw the woman deceased on the floor. One officer spotted a baby lying on the bed.

“The baby’s here, dude, and the baby’s still alive,” one officer said to another.

They Broke the Door In

They immediately broke the door in, retrieved the baby, and handed her over to firefighters.

The child was in a severe condition, having gone without milk or water for days. She was emaciated, but her small feet were still kicking.

She “had all the signs of poor medical condition… Staff at the hospital had informed law enforcement if quick and decisive action wasn’t taken immediately, the child may not be with us today,” a Phoenix police officer said.

One Life Lost and One Saved—A Bittersweet Ending

The mother’s cause of death is unknown and is pending review. Police found no evidence to indicate that there was foul play or forced entry to her apartment.

The baby is healthy and recovering now, but the mother’s neighbor feels deeply sad and regretful about the mother’s death.

“I don’t feel good because the mother lost her life, and I just wish we could have at least saved her life along with the baby’s life,” she said.

This event highlights the importance of postpartum care for women, who need support in the time following their child’s birth. It’s a sad case that could have been terribly sadder had the mom’s neighbor not been aware and concerned. Praise God that the neighbor called the police when she did and that the newborn is alive and healthy!
