Landlord Surprises His Tenants By Offering Free Rent in November and December

A few lucky tenants in Portsmouth, VA, got a tremendous blessing over the holidays. A generous landlord gave them free rent for November and December. That’s what I call a very merry Christmas indeed.

Landlord Gives Free Rent to a Dozen Tenants

“I know what it’s like to have a housing crisis and instability when it comes to rent, because I myself have struggled in the past,” said Travis Johnson, who owns a business, Homebridge Health Care, and has 12 houses he rents out in Portsmouth. 

He gave all of his tenants free rent for November and December. 

“That’s what inspired me to give my tenants free rent for the holidays,” he added. “The movement actually became bigger than just a moment; it became a national movement.”

Travis also heads the Homebridge Community Care Foundation, which assists single parents with rent and mortgage payments. 

Paying it Forward

“Whether you’re a client of ours, an employee of ours, or even if you’re not, we’re going to always pay it forward. That’s our motto,” Traid said. 

One of his tenants, Missy Waller, was over the moon when Travis told her she’d have free rent for the rest of 2025. 

“He was like, ‘Come outside.’ And when I came outside, he said, ‘Y’all ain’t gotta bring rent for November and December,’” recalled Waller. “You mean literally you don’t have to pay anything? I just jumped for joy."

“We actually have six more homes to knock on the door and let them know they’re receiving free rent for the month of December,” Travis said. 

Helping Families on a National Scale

He also shared that he wants to help families on a national scale and says anyone in any state can apply for help by contacting homes@homebridgeco.com.

What a wonderful young man! He knows he has the ability to give, so that’s what he’s determined to do—and it’s such a wonderful blessing for his tenants. The fact that he didn’t just forgive them of one month of rent—but two—is simply amazing!
