Police Escort Paralyzed Teen to Prom Years After Childhood Shooting

When India Williams got shot with a stray bullet while riding her bike, the Detroit police department was there to wrap her in their arms. Ten years later, 18-year-old India is still being lifted up by the police department. This time, it’s for a very special event in the teen’s life: prom night.

The Detroit Police gave India her own police escort for her prom night. The teen was beautiful in her shiny silvery dress and wore a bright smile as she rode to her prom night with the police, with lights and sirens flashing all the way.

“She never lost her spirit, even after her accident in 2014 when she got shot," said her mom, Clinqute Burnett-Davis. "It didn’t break her.”

When India was 7, she had been riding her bike outside when two individuals chased and shot at each other. India suffered the consequences of their reckless actions, and the perpetrators were never found and apprehended. The accident left India with partial paralysis and took away her ability to walk.

An Amazing 10-Year Relationship Between the Girl and the Department

The Detroit Police and India have maintained a tight relationship since the incident. The department has been a huge inspiration to her. India even pursued the DPD Explorer Program and was named Honorary Sergeant Williams.

“I love it, they never let my baby down and it’s always amazing," her mom said.

India’s Bright Future

India is graduating from high school and is going off to university in the fall.

“I’m going to college for pre-med, and when I'm done with that, I'll probably join the police," Williams said.

“If she wants to, I would give India a job with the department,” said Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison.

What a touching story! How amazing that the whole police department has kept India Williams in their hearts since she was a little girl. It just goes to show how much impact thoughtful gestures can have.
