Family Grows From 4 to 8 Overnight After Welcoming Identical Quadruplet Daughters

A Rhode Island couple started trying for a third child and were in for a big surprise when they found out that they were pregnant with identical quadruplet daughters. Rachel Vargos and her husband Marco had two children, a boy, and a girl when they got the surprising news at an ultrasound. Their family would grow from 4 to 8 overnight.

"She said, 'Right now, there are four of them.' And I just kind of went blank. I don't know. I think I was in shock," Rachel said about hearing the news at the ultrasound. They learned that there was not just one baby like they thought, but four. It was quite a miracle. They would be having four daughters spontaneously, without fertility treatments or any other interventions.

There is only a 1 in 11 million chance of this happening, according to a news release by Banner Health.

With the news of the unique pregnancy, the couple traveled from their home in Rhode Island to Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona for specialized care. "This was something that could have cost her, you know, [her] life, [her] health," Marco shared.

"We looked into seeking a specialist who was not just a maternal fetal medicine specialist, but who was also a specialist in high order multiples," Rachel explained. The couple wanted to be prepared for the high-risk pregnancy that comes with having multiples.

They Met Dr. Elliot

This was when they met Dr. John Elliott. He is a world-renowned physician at Valley Perinatal Services. During his career, Dr. Elliot delivered more than 100 sets of quadruplets, and he said he had never seen anything like this before.

Rachel did successfully give birth via C-section on January 24, 2025, at the Banner University Medical Center. Baby Sofia, Philomena, Veronica, and Isabel were born at 30 weeks and three days. "I felt a huge sense of relief because I felt like they had made it, they were going to be OK," Rachel added.

The Identical Quadruplet Daughters Are Back Home With Their Brother and Sister

The new family of eight is back on the East Coast with older brother Walter, and sister Stella, still adjusting to the change. We wish this family many blessings as they focus on raising their six children.
