Young California Boy Survives Coyote Attack While at His Sister's Softball Game

A 6-year-old Carson, California, resident was attacked by a coyote at his sister’s softball game. Even though there were many people around, that didn’t stop the coyote from attacking little Enoch Palomar. Thankfully, he was able to scream for help and survived the coyote attack.

An Unexpected Attack at a Softball Game

Enoch says the wild coyote chased him down and bit and scratched him as he tried to escape.

“It just kept biting me, and I was trying to kick it,” Enoch said. “It was too fast and it just jumped. I was trying my hardest and then it didn’t work, and then I yelled.”

“I wasn’t thinking of anything. I was just yelling,” Enoch said.

His mom, Melissa, heard Enoch screaming and ran over to him. She made noise at the coyote, and it ran away.

“I was like, ‘Get up, get up!'” said Melissa. “I was just hysterical.”

Little Boy Survives Coyote Attack

Enoch had scratches over most of his body and had bites on the back of his head and both legs. He needed over 20 stitches and several rabies shots, but he is recovering.

“The one thing I don’t like in the hospital is, like, shots and those nose things that you put in,” Enoch said.

A Surge of Coyote Sightings

It is uncommon for coyotes to attack humans. Recently, however, they have been coming to urban areas and attacking small dogs in California. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates the state has between 250,000 and 750,000 coyotes. Fish and Wildlife collected Enoch’s clothing for DNA sampling so that they could track down the animal that bit Enoch.

“There are a lot of coyotes. I mean, I’ve seen them in the street [while I’m driving], but I never thought they would be so close to us,” Melissa said. “You know, for a lot of people to be there and still a coyote to go to the playground and attack them? It’s very shocking to me.”

A doctor told Melissa that she’s fortunate to have gotten to Enoch in time, as his wounds could have been much more severe. 

It’s astounding that a wild animal that large would come attack a person in broad daylight in a public area with many people. Thank God that Melissa heard her child’s screams and that he will make a full recovery!
