8 Country Songs That Praise God

Here are eight great country songs that praise God.

How Great Thou Art by Carrie Underwood

This song is one of the most inspirational songs of all time in country music worship circles and Carrie Underwood’s version of How Great Thou Art is simply spine-tingling.  It focuses on the greatness of God that can hardly be described by mere words.  She sings, perhaps in the Spirit of God, in a way that seems like we’re hearing the angels proclaim God’s glory straight from heaven as belts out the powerful and theologically sound words, “when I think of God, His Son not sparing. Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in. That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing He bled and died to take away my sin.”  Amen!

Standing on the Promises of God by Alan Jackson

Alan Jackson, crystal clear voice sings praises to God and about all of His precious promises in the classic, Standing on the Promises of God.  This song points to the promises of God’s Word and that all of His promises are sure and amen, as he sings, “Standing on the promises of Christ my King. Through eternal ages let his praises ring; Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing, Standing on the promises of God” while he’s “Resting in my Savior as my all in all,” and indeed, He is our all in all and you and I can believe every single promise that God has ever made in His Word, from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21.

Savior’s Shadow by Blake Shelton

This is a relatively new song by Blake Shelton about being awoken by God and inspired to write a praise song for Jesus Christ.  Savior’s Shadow is almost as if Shelton’s standing in Christ’s shadow while he pens this praise song.  He sings and writes, “I'm standing in my Savior's shadow. Following his footsteps there. Every mountain, every ocean.  He hears my every prayer” and “Though the devil try to break me. My sweet Jesus won't forsake me” and neither will He you or me because he knows, “When I'm in my Savior's shadow. I'm who I'm supposed to be.”

Jesus, Take the Wheel by Carrie Underwood

This is the second song I have selected as one of eight great Christian country praise songs that are truly worthy of worshiping God in song and in word.  Jesus, Take the Wheel, by Carrie Underwood, actually shot up and stayed in Billboard’s country music charts even though it was an inspirational song and today, it’s considered a country music worship song classic.  Carrie sings about a lady who says, “She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati. On a snow white Christmas Eve. Going home to see her Mama and her Daddy with the baby in the backseat.  Fifty miles to go and she was running low on faith and gasoline.”  I wonder, how many of us could honestly say we’ve been running low on faith before.  Suddenly, “she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass. She saw both their lives flash before her eyes” and the powerful words, “Jesus take the wheel. Take it from my hands. Cause I can't do this on my own. I'm letting go.”  What godly words of wisdom these are!

Three Wooden Crosses by Randy Travis

The song, Three Wooden Crosses, by Randy Travis, is a powerful song about death but dying in the faith as he sings about “A farmer and a teacher, a hooker and a preacher, Ridin' on a midnight bus bound for Mexico. One's headed for vacation, one for higher education, An' two of them were searchin' for lost souls. That driver never ever saw the stop sign. An' eighteen wheelers can't stop on a dime.”  Travis sings, “I guess it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you. It's what you leave behind you when you go” as the “preacher whispered: "Can't you see the Promised Land?" As he laid his blood-stained bible in that hooker's hand.”  This song shows the brevity of frailty of life and that we anyone can be saved at any time, regardless of their past.  This song also shows that life’s like a vapor and it can suddenly be gone as James wrote, “yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (James 4:14).

Holy is the Lord by Don Poythress

The song, Holy is the Lord, has been sung in so many different genres that you probably haven’t heard a country version of this song and Don Poythress does an outstanding job in this great country worship song, giving the Holy Lord God all the praise, honor, and glory He deserves, singing “Holy is the Lord God Almighty. The earth is filled with His glory” and so “We stand and lift up our hands. For the joy of the Lord is our strength. We bow down and worship Him now.  How great, how awesome is He” and that is true.

God of Wonders by Bryan White

God of Wonders, by Bryan White, is another great worship song in the country style that focuses on God’s holiness and on His glory.  This song lifts God up to the highest heavens in singing praises to Him because He is the “Lord of all creation. Of water, earth, and sky. The heavens are Your tabernacle. Glory to the Lord on High,” and just as the psalmist declares (Psalm 19:1), “The universe declares Your majesty. You are holy, holy” and since we know that God is “holy, holy, holy,” we can sing “halleluiah to the Lord of heaven and earth.”

 I Can Only Imagine by Emerson Drive

If you’ve never heard of Emerson Drive, a Canadian band, you will love this great worships song called “I Can Only Imagine.”  This song gives us the image of Christ’s return and how we’ll react to seeing Him for the very first time.  They sing, “I can only imagine when that day comes.  When I find myself standing in the sun” and “when that day comes.  When I find myself standing in the sun…I can only imagine.”  And for those who have trusted in Christ, we can only imagine that great day too…and, what will we do?  We will “stand in His presence or to our knees will [we] fall” or “in awe of you be still?”  We can only imagine…for now.  One thing we know is that “forever we will worship” Him.
