5-Year-Old Student Was In Danger And Missouri Teacher 'Didn't Think Twice' About Saving Her

A teacher donates a kidney to a student in a beautiful act of self-sacrifice for someone else.

When you become a mother to a child with special needs, your biggest prayer is that the world will make room for her. You pray the world shows her kindness and you pray until your heart bursts that she will thrive.

You also hope for dedicated teachers who will leave a lasting impact, too. But one teacher did something so extraordinary and selfless, it’s sure to make you cry tears of goodness. A five-year-old student was in danger and her Missouri teacher, ‘didn’t think twice’ about saving her. This teacher donates a kidney to a student because, “I knew Kayleigh really needed it, so I thought, ‘Why not try?’” said Kayleigh Kulage’s pre-school teacher, Robin Mach.

That’s right, Robin Mach is the kind of teacher every mom dreams of. She genuinely cares about her students but not just when they are in her classroom but she cares about them for a lifetime.

A Special Blessing

Desiree and Josh Kulage, Kayleigh’s parents, felt blessed the moment they met Robin. As a special needs pre-school teacher, she came to their home to educate Kayleigh.

Kayleigh had been the gift her parents had prayed for when they wanted to become parents. But she was born at 26 weeks old and spent weeks in NICU. From the time Kayleigh was born, she’s endured multiple surgeries, diagnosed with parietal blindness, and failing kidneys.

Because of her kidneys, Kayleigh needs 11 hours of dialysis treatment every day. 

But their worst nightmare began to unfold as Kayleigh stopped responding to treatments. She needed a kidney transplant soon. The problem is that Kayleigh needed a smaller kidney because of her size. So, when her teacher Robin learned Kayleigh needed help, she didn’t hesitate. 

Selfless Teacher Donates Kidney To Student

Robin endured three months of testing of what she called a “roller coaster ride” of emotions.  And when Kayleigh's doctors gave the green light, Robin was elated. The teacher donated her kidney to the 5-year-old student in an incredible act of kindness.

When Desiree learned of the news, she said,  "I was so relieved and excited when I found out because Kayleigh's kidney was coming from someone we knew.” Kayleigh came through surgery with flying colors and was “moving and grooving to go” when she woke up. 

Not only is education a gift that opens up a whole new world to each of us, gifts of compassion, giving, generosity, kindness, and sacrifice help each of us know just how amazing life can be. Robin certainly deserves the teacher of the year award (for life!)
