Students at Washington Middle School Find Comfort in Their New Therapy Dog

One Washington state middle school is getting a lot calmer after it got its own school therapy dog. The pup, named Chandler, lights up kids' days with just a wag of his tail.

“It's hard to even put it into words until you see it come to life…” said Emily Moen, a mental health support specialist. “We had another Canine Companions dog placed within the Lake Stevens School District for a couple of years up until a couple of years ago, and we have been without for a few years, and it was noticeable. There's a lot of things that we can do and help and provide, but there's a lot of things that Chandler can do that people just can't.”

Chandler was given to the school through Canine Companions, a nonprofit that trains and provides service dogs.

School Therapy Dog Brightens Children’s Day

“I love seeing him every day,” one student shared. “He lights up my day.”

“He made me feel welcome. He made me feel loved, also,” another student added.

“He doesn't really talk back and he can't like tell anybody else. So, it's kind of like your own kind of like secret little box with him,” one 8th grader shared. “I feel safe here and welcome because of him.”

“Kids do amazing things when they get to sit with him and talk with him and pet him and love on him,” said Emily. “It's magic. And that's the word that I continue to use with what Chandler does.  I have had students tell me that the reason they come to school is because they get to see and spend time with Chandler.”

“Chandler is such a unique dog. One of the best dogs I've ever met. And even just like talking about it makes me happy and puts a smile on my face,” said one student.

Dog Offers a Calming, Comforting Presence for Kids

From a video of Chandler engaging with the students, it’s evident that he is immensely loved and appreciated.

“We love Chandler and Mrs. Moen!” the school said.

Science shows that a dog’s presence can reduce humans’ cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone. It’s clear that the children at Lake Stevens Middle School are benefiting from Chandler's happy and peaceful presence—and Chandler is, too! He’ll have no shortage of treats and belly rubs.
