Mom Prays After Her Son's Heart Stopped For 2 Hours And Then Miraculously, He Comes Back

Even after doctors declared Sammy Berko dead, his mom kept praying. And two hours later, a miracle happened!

When 16-year-old Sammy Berko went rock climbing at a gym with his friends, the unthinkable happened. The young, seemingly healthy teenager suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

"He climbed to the top of the wall, rang the bell, as we were told, and then his body went limp," the boy's mother, Jennifer, recalled. "And it looked like he was either playing around or passed out. They weren't quite sure and when they realized he was unresponsive, they lowered him slowly."

Jennifer and her husband, Craig, received the call every parent dreads. They learned Sammy was unresponsive and being given CPR.

The news would have been terrifying all by itself. But it was even worse for the couple as they'd experienced something similar when their 10-year-old son, Frankie, died three years earlier after his heart stopped following a minor epileptic seizure. 

The Miracle Story Of Sammy Berko

The parents of Sammy Berko arrived at the gym and watched helplessly as staff members and then paramedics administered CPR hoping to save the teen. They'd periodically get a heartbeat but then it would slip away again.

Doctors took over with CPR at the hospital but as a former firefighter, Craig knew things weren't looking good.

"My hopes were that my son would all of a sudden wake up like in the movies," he said. "But in my head, it was exactly what we went through with our other son. I didn't have a good feeling about it. It had been too long."

After two hours, doctors gave Jennifer and Craig Berko the worst possible news.

"They looked at us and said, 'I'm so sorry, but he's gone,'" Jennifer recalled.

Mom Prays For A Miracle

It was clear medical staff alone couldn't save Sammy Berko. In fact, doctors told Jennifer and Craig to say their goodbyes to their son. But this healing wasn't going to come from man. It was going to come straight from the Almighty!

"I started talking to him, just telling him how much I love him and sorry that we didn't know how to save him," Jennifer said. "Suddenly, as I started praying, my husband said, 'oh my gosh, he's moving.'"

Something powerful happens when a mom prays. And in this case, it brought her son back from death!

"He did literally go from being dead to coming back to life," said Sammy's doctor, Dr. Stacey Hall. "I have never seen it before."

The doctors and nurses were amazed. They immediately started working on Sammy Berko again. And everyone knew they'd just experienced something incredible.

"These are professionals who have been doing this their entire lives, who have seen the worst of the worst. Each and every one of them afterward came to us and said that they have never seen anything like this before. Ever. Never had they ever pronounced somebody and suddenly they came back five minutes later," Jennifer explained. "That feeling of seeing his heartbeat, there are no words for that. There are no words. We just stood there. I mean, grateful is the biggest understatement ever to know that he might make it."

Because of how long Sammy Berko went without oxygen, he still has a lot of recovering left to do. But he remains optimistic and continues to amaze his medical team.

"We do see kids all the time here who have had CPR, but with very prolonged CPR, we typically see very severe global anoxic brain injury," Dr. Hall said. "So to me, he is a literal miracle."

Sammy's sudden cardiac arrest also provided some insight into the passing of his brother, Frankie. Though Frankie did have a minor epileptic seizure, Jennifer never understand why that would cause his heart to stop.

However, since Sammy suddenly suffered cardiac arrest, too, doctors took a closer look. After a test of the entire family (even Frankie thanks to a DNA sample in the medical system), doctors diagnosed Jennifer, Sammy, and Frankie with a rare genetic disease that causes irregular heart rhythms in response to adrenaline surges. While the discovery won't bring Frankie back, it does at least answer some questions for the family.
