He Helped Deliver Her, Then Became a Lifelong Friend—22 Years Later, He Watched Her Graduate

This year’s Grand Canyon University commencement ceremony had a very special guest. A lifelong friend of one of the graduates, a firefighter who delivered her as a baby, attended and made her day. He flew 800 miles from Colorado Springs to be there for her.

It was 22 years ago that firefighter Alan Kent attended a call for a woman in distress and helped her deliver her baby, Chloe Huddle. Since then, he’s made sure to be there for every birthday and important moment of her life.

“Alan was the first person to hold me, and we’ve had a special bond ever since,” Chloe said.

A few weeks after she was born, Chloe’s mom brought her to the station to show the firefighters. That was when Kent and Chloe got their first photo taken together.

The retired firefighter said even if he wasn’t retired, he would have made every effort to be there for Chloe on her big day.

More than Love, the Firefighter Gives Her Hope

Kent’s goodness and love for Chloe, who got a degree in education studies, gives her hope about the world.

Kent said, “In our line of work, you know, we don’t usually have all the time good things happen. And sometimes very bad things happen in our careers, especially in the fire service. To have something as great as this was, and then to continue out throughout the years to watch her grow, that’s been that connection, that bond throughout the years.”

This doesn’t mark the end of Kent’s involvement in her milestones. The next big thing for Chloe is her wedding this summer—and you better believe Kent will be there.

It’s just incredible that this firefighter would make an effort for Chloe and be in her life as much as he can. What a wonderful gift!
