Strangers Create Wheelchair That Lets Disabled Boy Play in Ocean And His Joy Has Mom in Tears

One mom was recently brought to tears after seeing her disabled son playing in the ocean.

Helen Butterfield is a mom of three, and her two-year-old son, Joey Leathwood, has quadriplegic cerebral palsy. This affects both of his arms and legs and often his torso and face, too. Joey also suffers from bad sensory issues and cannot stand the feel of grass, sand, sun, or snow.

Because of his condition, beach trips have always been hard for Joey’s family. But one charity called Beach Ability offered Joey the use of one of their beach wheelchairs, and he was able to have a grand time experiences the waves of the ocean.

Helen was able to get a video capturing the precious moment of Joey enjoying the sea waves for the first time.

"It was probably one of the most special moments of my life, seeing his reaction. Honestly, he has never laughed so much,” Helen shared. "Beach Ability have given my boy the chance to experience waves and mother nature's beauty instead of feeling left out and different. I'm just so glad I managed to get it on camera. We will never, ever forget this day.”

Helen continued: "I was unsure at first with the wheelchair as I didn't know much about them and thought there was no way it would go across the sand. But it was the easiest thing I've ever pushed. It was so smooth and simple to use.”

Although Joey has a lot of sensory issues, one thing he does love is water. “So, I had to give Beach Ability a go to see if he had the same love for the sea as he does a splash in the bath,” his mom said. Turns out, Joey absolutely loved splashing in the waves!
