A Boy Scout Helps Save a Tourist's Life, Despite Struggling With Asthma Himself

A man was visiting Mackinac Island when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest. But fortunately for him, he came on a local Boy Scout troop’s volunteer week. One Boy Scout saved his life, despite suffering from Asthma, a serious condition that affects the lungs.

When 16-year-old Honor Scout Kenny Recor understood what was happening to the visitor, he ran to get an AED (automated external defibrillator) from the top of Fort Mackinac, despite his trouble with breathing.

“I was breathing heavily, but it didn’t feel like I was getting oxygen to my lungs. But I knew my comfort didn’t matter at the moment because I knew someone was actively dying, and I did not know their status, so despite that, I sprinted as fast as I could,” the young scout said.

As Kenny was retrieving the defibrillator, an off-duty nurse who was walking by performed CPR. Once he returned, Kenny gave the AED to his scout leader, who had AED training and used the device to resuscitate the man before the paramedics arrived.

Teamwork Helped Save the Day

Kenny is proud that he, his scout leader, and the nurse all used their skills to come together and help the man. If they hadn’t, this story could have had a different ending.

Kenny had learned about emergency response in a Boy Scout merit badge course. This event, like many others, shows the importance of having AEDs in public places and the importance of emergency response, AED, and CPR training. You can’t predict when an emergency will happen, so it’s essential to be prepared.

It’s incredible that Kenny, his troop, and the nurse were right there and quick to jump into action when the man needed help! Those few minutes of speedy effort made all the difference.
