Well, I for one, am not at all offended. I had a good laugh. Nice way to start a youth group and get the kids attention, that's for sure. We would probably have a follow-up discussion about this very topic: do you find this sense of humor offensive? Does Christ/God the Father have a sense of humor? How do we face crises in our lives without reliance on the Trinity and some lighthearted fun? Where do we draw the line between mocking and silliness and how can we help others to do that so it doesn't turn to being hurtful toward others in school? (Kids cross that line all the time, but most studies show they wouldn't without peer support or influence.) Then we will turn our attention to more important and truly offensive things, like injustice and poverty and helping our neighbor--showing our gratitude by our deeds more than words. Just my nickles worth.
Casting this as sacriligous is absolutely ridiculous. God has a sense of humor, but apparently some people here do not. I think God is using Tim to further His kingdom in a unique way - and that has nothing to do with being "of/in the world." Comments here about not judging are spot on. I suspect that most of the people here that don't like this believe that any music that doesn't come from a 1500-1899 protestant hymmnal is sacriligous, including any "worship" music that doesn't come from a pipe organ or perhaps piano, isn't honoring or worship of God. Not so. Such views are quite short sighted. God can and does use music of all types (including contemporary Christian music - which has be variously disparaged here) to reach people of all types for His kingdom. We too often cast stones as anyone who doesn't think like we do or worship like we do (cf. "If We Are the Body" by Casting Crowns) - which is decidely un-Christian. How about we stop 'judging' and simply be The Body.
I think that many need to lighten up on this one. Yes worshiping, God is holy, but we all know God has a sense of humor. God isn't thinking of us enjoying some fun as sinful and vile. Whenever I see Christians being too uptight, it makes me think of David. King David was a great man of God. He is the only individual in the bible stated to be "a man after God's own heart". He is the man whose descendants brought forth Jesus into this world. Holy man, Godly man. But did David do that we all know him well for? Bathsheba. This Godly man saw a beautiful, naked woman bathing, he wanted her physically, he had sex with her and sent her home, she became pregnant, and then to cover up his mistake, David had her husband killed. And through that man we were given Jesus. So tell me God doesn't have a light-hearted side. God chose a sinner to bring himself to earth. Do you think that with something like this, that he's looking at simple comedy as being derogatory and bad? No, not all. It's being too strict that turns many off from following God. There has to be a good balance, not too liberal, yet not too uptight.
There is a time and season for everything under the sun. Tim gives us clean, fresh humor and helps us laugh at ourselves. Christians need to smile and laugh, the world doesn't want what we have if we are always grumpy and serious. Jesus came to give us life abundant. I plan on having laughter here and in Heaven! He is a wonderful alternative to other comedians out there who curse, disrespect women, and talk about sex all the time. I know I enjoy it when my children laugh and even joke with me in a teasing way. Tim means no disrespect. He has a gift that God gave him and is using it. If you don't agree, don't watch him but God made him this way and frankly, I am glad. Keep up the good work, Tim. You are loved...
Laughing is good. It says so right in the Bible.
Agreed, so many judges here. "Laughter is the best medicine". Not all have that gift to make others laugh. Laughter eases the burden on the soul. Those who laugh have new hope in life. Real life. Since God is above all in everything He is indeed above all in His humor. Those here who judge falsely this man as if they know his heart are like little children who don't want to take their medicine. They say that they enjoy comedy but they themselves don't have the ability or heart that it takes to cure others with such a great gift. This man has no malice in his heart and he suceeds in helping with whatever burdens that they bring. Simple laughter. But the Pharisees here say "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners." Nitpickers. So which is more important, that this man unburdens others, or that he impresses those who have become his judges. If he is doing Gods will, those here who profess otherwise will have to answer to God for their false witness. I myself see nothing wrong with the way that he glorifies God.
Philippians 1:15 to 18 says “It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
To my beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, I'm responding to this forum not as a self-righteous critic but in great concern for the family of God. If we're not sober, then we can be easily deceived by the enemy by the appearance of things rather than the substance, and major on the things that are minor, while making light of the things which are weighty. I'm just wondering why if God has such a sense of humor, He chose not to articulate or express it directly through His Beloved Son and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who is the example that we ALL must follow, (1 Peter 2:21-25). Throughout his earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated the things He saw and spoke of the things that He heard of His Heavenly Father pertaining to His glorious kingdom, whereby the Scriptures give us no reference that the disciples fell over in laughter as He spoke with divine authority. I do agree that there is a time for every purpose under heaven, including laughter (according to Eccl 3), but are we as followers of Christ truly, righteously, and properly discerning the times and age that we're living in? With all the chaos, lawlessness, and wickedness abounding in our churches as well as in our culture, is it not an "itching ear" that would rather give place to Charismatic comedians over the voice of the true prophetic voice of the Holy Spirit speaking to the Church in the hour of temptation? May the Lord Himself gird us all in His strength and guide us by His Spirit so that we may be ready for His Imminent and every so closer return! Amen!
I'm glad God has a bigger sense of humor than most of us... Worship is so much more than just songs (and I'm a music worship leader in my church so trust me, I love "traditional" worship greatly too). Worship is about loving God, honoring Him, living for Him. That includes EVERY area of our life - and laughing at such a thing like this can be completely PURE! The only thing that would make this become dishonoring is if the heart was truly intending to be dishonoring. If a person is one who falls on their face in reverence to God, truly loves Him and is continually cultivating a relationship with Him, then ALSO having a good time and joking around isn't a problem in the slightest.
Thanks Tim! Your video led to a 30 minute conversation with an agnostic man about why I love Jesus and about what I believe. Had I not show him this video, the conversation wouldn't have taken place.
I love Tim Hawkins. He is still honoring God even if he used a secular song to do so. Rock and Roll is not evil. Anyway God has a sense of humor. He made us right?
Tim has provided us with more proof that you can't redeem bad music with good lyrics. Many people redo popular music with Christian lyrics ignoring that they may either 1. remind someone of a lifestyle they are trying to leave behind, or 2. the music is just bad and the style is just bad and it can't be redeemed. funny and a bit sick. what else is hilarious is that these 60 year old performers still have people stand in line to see them wail and screech.
I don't have the vocal range to attempt a Robert Plant imitation in church. But if I had the capability...I'd be tempted.
hahahahaha! I LOVED THIS! Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sure the Lord has quite the sense of humor. Laugh a little, life's too short! Give your laugh box some good ol' fashioned exercise! This was hilarious!
this is really only funny if you know led zephlin's music-and I don't. I love Tim Hawkins, but this was weird.
I like it when Tim Hawkins takes off on Chik-Fil-A, people with kids, etc., but honestly I didn't find this funny. It hurt. I guess because the lyrics use God's name and describe Him, but the delivery and antics were not honoring of the One they described. I hope God Tube and Tim Hawkins rethink this one.
