A Prayer to Discover Wonder in Your Routines

Bible Reading
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.” - Lamentations 3:22-23, NIV

Listen or Read Below

Many of us start new routines in late summer and early fall, as children go back to school and new projects and programs start at work and church. Our schedules fill up with all sorts of responsibilities, so we need to stick to routines to manage them well.

As you juggle your busy schedule, your routines may feel boring because you have to repeat them over and over. You can get tired of preparing the same meals, driving the same route, and working on the same tasks day after day. Over time, your routines start to feel automatic. Your mind moves through them almost without noticing. While that can help you get through your to-do list efficiently, it can also cause you to shrink your whole life down to the level of your to-do list. You can miss out on the wonder that’s hidden inside everyday life – even in your routines.

The Bible reminds you in Lamentations 3:22-23 that even ordinary mornings can be extraordinary. These verses point out that God’s love never stops and God’s mercies never end; they are new every morning. God renews his compassion and faithfulness in your life every single day. That gives you new hope each day, regardless of how the previous day went. If you approach your routines with a fresh sense of hope every day, you can discover God’s wonder every day in the middle of those routines. Even the simple act of waking up each morning can become more than just something you do automatically when your alarm goes off. It can become a way to celebrate that God’s love and mercy are there for you to rely on again.

Even the most routine, repetitive parts of your life can help you notice God’s presence with you. The same faithful God who sustained his people during Bible times is right there with you, sustaining you as you go through your own daily routines. God’s love and mercy are woven into every part of your life. If you look for glimpses of that love and mercy, you’ll find them throughout your day – including the parts of your day when you’re just going through routines. When you help your children get ready for school, God may inspire you to see how his love is flowing through your relationships with them. When you pour a cup of tea or coffee before work, you can use that time to communicate with God through prayer and meditation and receive messages from him. When you drive the same route over and over on your commute, you can notice something in nature that gives you a sense of awe about God as the Creator.

Lamentations 3:22-23 highlights how God’s love and mercy never end. You can carry that same perspective into your daily routines. When your schedule feels repetitive, it can help to remember that God’s mercies are not repetitive at all. God’s mercies are new every morning. Each day gives you new opportunities to experience God’s faithful love, and new ways to notice the goodness God places in your path. Day after day, God reliably gives you the wisdom and strength to get through your routines and do the tasks in front of you well. God’s presence goes with you into offices, kitchens, carpools, classrooms, and wherever else your routines take you. When you look for those signs of grace and mercy, your ordinary routines can help you notice God’s wonderful work around you.

So, instead of seeing your routines as obligations, you can see them as opportunities to discover God’s wonderful love and mercy at work in your life. God doesn’t get tired of your routines; he meets you right in the middle of them. Even the most ordinary routines can remind you of the extraordinary reality that God’s love never stops and God’s mercy never runs out!

Let’s Pray

Dear God, thank you for the gift of each day you give me to live. Sometimes the daily routines I repeat over and over shrink my perspective down to the level of my to-do list. But I know that there’s much more you want me to notice and experience – even on my busiest days. Your Word reminds me that your love never stops and that your mercies are new every morning. I’m grateful that you’re always doing something wonderful in my life. Please help me slow down enough to see the signs of your wonderful work every day – including in the middle of my daily routines. As children return to school and work starts a new season, open my eyes to the extraordinary wonder hidden in the ordinary tasks I do. Help me connect with your constant presence. Let the routines of my life remind me of your faithful love and mercy. Thank you for pouring your love and mercy into my life every single day! Amen.
