A Prayer to Celebrate Our Nation’s 250th Birthday

Bible Reading:
“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.” - Psalm 150:6

America is celebrating its 250th birthday! What an amazing accomplishment, giving us much to celebrate as a people and as a nation.

On the official White House website, it states: “As we prepare to celebrate this momentous milestone in our nation’s history, President Trump has invited communities of faith to pray for our country and to give thanks for the gift of freedom.”

Looking back over 250 years, we find that America’s beginnings were established by men and women who believed in God and in His word, as author and historian Dr. Jerry Newcombe, with Mark A Beliles, reveals in their book Thomas Jefferson and The God Who Gave Us Liberty:

“Jefferson and numerous others of the Founding Fathers themselves declared that the law of nature was the will of God, and that it was binding upon all people, in all ages, in all geographic locations. All men have God’s general revelation but need the Bible to know it most accurately.”

The Bible inspired the original Founding Fathers to look to God as the source of true freedom. History records how its words influenced and helped to establish the foundational beginnings of the United States of America.

The following are four ways biblical principles influenced the establishment of our nation:

1. Through the Great Awakening in America, a spiritual revival and renewal, hearts were prepared to forge the way for America’s founding, uniting 13 separate British colonies to come together before the Revolutionary War.

2. God moved through the Black Robed Regiment, a group of bold, patriotic pastors who preached liberty from their pulpits, to help rally patriots to stand up and fight for their biblically based beliefs, igniting colonists to desire freedom and independence from England.

3. The Declaration of Independence was written based on Christian sources, including the Mecklenburg Declaration of 1775, the writings of William Blackstone, John Locke, and more.

4. Public schools were specifically started to teach children how to read the Bible for themselves because of its importance to life and daily living. It was the foundational book for the masses and the basis for the establishment of the Ivy League higher educational institutions of Harvard, William and Mary, Yale, and Princeton.

Celebrating America’s Biblical-Based Heritage

America’s founders risked their very lives and everything dear to them to forge an entirely new form of government and nation, inspired by and grounded in Biblical principles.

Founders depended on an Almighty God and a willing, faithful people who trusted in Him and believed the Bible to become a free and independent reality.

Our 250th Anniversary is a day to celebrate what our United States Constitution Preamble states:

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessing of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution of the United States of America.”

Let’s Pray:

Dear Father,

We praise You with grateful hearts, as we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday. Thank you for the way You guided our Founding Fathers to establish America on solid biblical principles, giving our nation a godly heritage that remains to this day.

Fill our lips, O Lord, with praise for Your great and mighty work in establishing our nation.

Strengthen America today to hold true to these foundational biblical truths that our nation was established by and built upon.

Lead us as a people and a nation to hold firm to our biblically-based principles and to yield to Your Almighty guidance for America.

Grant our leaders and our citizens godly wisdom and insight to move forward in our nation, determined to stay steadfast in faithfulness and devotion to You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen

What do we do when God no longer feels as close as He used to feel?

Many sincere believers experience seasons when prayer feels empty, Scripture feels quiet, and God seems strangely absent. For leaders especially, those seasons can feel confusing, discouraging, and even shameful.

In this episode of the Unhurried Living Podcast, Alan Fadling sits down with theologian and spiritual formation professor Kyle Strobel to discuss the new book When God Seems Distant, coauthored with John Coe.
