A Prayer for Deeper Trust in God’s Goodness
By Keri Eichberger

Bible Reading
But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. (Jeremiah 17:7)

It was just a few short days before the wedding when my heart finally cracked open. As tears spilled over my cheeks, everything within me cried out, God, I don’t want to let go of my son. I know I’m supposed to be happy and full of joy because he’s found his perfect one. But it’s breaking my heart to break up the home I’ve come to find great comfort and fulfillment in.

The thing is, I know God promises his blessings and goodness will follow me. But in that disheartening moment, I couldn’t imagine the upcoming season to be very good. If only I could deepen my trust in the Lord. So much so that hope would begin to blossom in my soul, no matter the struggle or circumstance. Yes, right now that would be nice.

Do you know the feeling? When you find your heart and soul weighed down by desperate hurt, yet you acknowledge that if you could simply trust that God has a really good plan for it all, and that so much goodness would surface from it all—if you could just trust God more—then maybe you would receive ease of your pain. Maybe then you could be at peace with your circumstances. And you may even find and feel some joy right where you are. I get it. I long to trust God with all my heart in the hard stuff and seasons of life, too.

And I believe that if we could truly trust God, we could find and focus on the good and find the joy we want. I know I want that. I also know God is always giving good, and that there is always good to give thanks for. And my goodness, how I want those thoughts to overpower my sadness and sorrow. I want my confidence to grow in the Lord’s unfailing love, which continually blesses me and those I love. What better way to live?

But how do we get there? How do we actually deepen our faith and trust?

We ask God. We seek his help, and we pursue his presence. I believe our growth happens in our daily dependence. Our declarations, first thing in the morning and throughout the day, of surrender, release, and gratitude. It’s in one day of dependence at a time, as we seek, that we see God’s faithfulness. And as we seek him more, we see his goodness more. And, we begin to weather life’s storms with faith a little more. Our trust deepens and grows. And our peace and joy deepen and grow.

As I made attempts to stop my tears that morning leading up to my son’s wedding, as I poured out my pain and hurt to our God who cares about it all, I made a deal with him. I would let go, I would focus on my gratitude for the good, but I was counting on him to come through with his promise of immeasurably more to come. I would trust the truth that he blesses those, like me, who place their trust in him—just as the bible states over and over throughout scripture. But the truth is, we don’t need to negotiate, barter, or bargain with God. He will come through. He will bless us as we trust him. Period. His goodness will follow us just like Psalm 23:6 says, Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life. We can count on this truth. I’ve seen it, I’m sure you’ve seen it, and we will see it again.

Hold tight to the truths of God’s faithful, unending goodness. Let them wash over you, your struggles, and all your circumstances. Let God’s Word sink into your soul. Let his promises deepen your faith and trust, day after day after day. God is most certainly trustworthy. God is most certainly so, so good.

Let’s Pray

Father God, You are full of abundant goodness. I know this because your trustworthy word says so, and because I have seen evidence all through my life. Yet, right now, there are circumstances surrounding me that hurt and are extremely hard. And what I want is to deepen my trust in the truth of your goodness so I can experience your peace and joy. I long for your peace and joy. Show me the good around me today, remind me that there is even more to come, and help me lean on your word and promises with greater confidence. Lord, I know you bless those whose confidence is in you, and I want that to be more true of me every day. I thank you for your faithfulness that always follows me and for your love that never leaves me. In Jesus name, Amen.
