Paul, in his letter to the Romans, exhorts us to be good citizens and uphold the laws of our land. In Hebrews, we are directed to welcome strangers. When a church engages the immigrant community these verses intersect and, at times, create a unique tension. Can we answer our call to be good citizens and still show hospitality to immigrants- both legal and illegal? Fortunately, these two Biblical directives are not mutually exclusive. ISAAC helps churches to work within existing law to help all immigrants- not just undocumented ones- with some basic needs. Whether it is providing education about immigration issues, developing ESL and citizenship classes or helping churches become federally "recognized" immigrant support organizations, ISAAC helps churches reach out to the mission field in their backyard.
A Prayer for When You Feel Lost - Your Daily Prayer - April 27
