The Light That Doesn't Fade Early
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’” (John 8:12 NLT)
SOMETHING TO PONDER
My family took a vacation once to a place where the sun didn’t set until late at night. I remember lying awake well past bedtime, trying hard to sleep while longing for the dark to come. Here at home, as summertime winds down, I sense shorter days and longer nights coming soon. Instead of longing for the dark, I dread its early arrival.
Living in a rural area adds to my awareness of longer nights. It’s quite different from places where daylight hours linger or the brightness of city lights invites activity well into the night. For me, the darkness becomes something to battle against. Even walking outside to gather the mail requires the use of a flashlight. I retreat into the safety of my home, turning on plenty of lights in an effort to keep darkness away.
Scripture is filled with beautiful references to light. Psalm 119:105 describes God’s Word as light. “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” In our darkest hours, verses like this help us to replace anxiety and fear with immeasurable peace. When darkness is so thick we cannot even see one step in front of us, God’s Word is powerful enough to saturate the path with light and reveal which way to go.
In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul prayed that, as followers of Jesus, light would illuminate people’s hearts with truth. “I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.” (Ephesians 1:18) Paul reminds us that the Holy Spirit is with us today, ready to fill us with whatever we need. He is our Provider, Helper, and Sustainer.
In our key verse for this evening, Jesus revealed the most important light of all. He described himself as “the light of the world.” Through these powerful words of our Savior, we have hope. When darkness descends, we don’t have to fear. We have the eternal light of Jesus living in our hearts. Jesus said, “If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” (John 8:12b)
When I look out my window to discover that night has already come, nothing eases my mind like knowing the One who dispels the darkness. When we are afraid, God holds the lantern out for us. And tonight, as bedtime nears, if you’re dreading the darkness to come, know there is comfort in this truth—Jesus is the light that never fades.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear God,
Thank you for your son, Jesus. He is the light that brings hope and peace in the darkest seasons of life. Your Word reminds me that Jesus is the light of the world. I can face each day and night because he lives in my heart. When daylight begins to fade and nighttime closes in, help me remember that I have nothing to fear. Help me rest knowing you are here with me, illuminating the darkness and surrounding me with comfort. Your Word says in Psalm 18:28, “You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.” Thank you, Heavenly Father, for showing me the way. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
Tonight’s devotion includes several verses that reference “light”. Reread those verses and think about how each one offers hope for this season.
Spend a few minutes this evening thanking Jesus for being the “light of the world”. Let him know what that means to you.
Imagine God holding a lantern out for you as you take a step of faith. Thank him for showing you the steps to take, one at a time.
