- Daily Devotional, November 7, 2011 "Lead On"11/6/2011 - Spending much of my childhood in the cool north of the US, I always thought of palm trees as something exotic. So when we traveled down to South Carolina to visit family every few years, I felt as if I was somewhere near Hawaii, even though I knew deep waters and many miles separated the two states.
- Daily Devotional, November 4, 2011 "Taking Root"11/3/2011 - A few years ago, I wrote about three street kids— Saddam, Moses, and Charles. At the time, I had helped lead them to a Christian home for children who had no other place to live. I thought the boys would be elated to leave their life of extreme suffering behind. But after only one month in his new environment, Saddam called to tell me that Charles, age 11, had run away.
- Daily Devotional, November 3, 2011 "Boring?"11/2/2011 - The gospel of Matthew contains the most important news the world has known. Why then, is its beginning so . . . boring? Genesis starts with epic majesty: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” In contrast, Matthew writes tepidly: “This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus” (1:1). Yawn.
- Daily Devotional, November 1, 2011 "Fashion Police"11/1/2011 - The southern Italian town of Castellammare has created its own version of the “fashion police.” The police force there is authorized to fine women who wear risqué clothing such as micro skirts, skimpy jeans, and low-cut shirts.
- Daily Devotional, October 31, 2011 "Are We Safe?"10/31/2011 - According to a 2010 Pew Forum on Religion report, 53 percent of Christians in the US did not know that Martin Luther was the person who inspired the Protestant Reformation. So they wouldn’t know that on October 31, 1517, in the little German town of Wittenberg, Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the church door—inviting scholars to debate the use of indulgences; a practice Luther believed gave believers a false assurance of their salvation
- Daily Devotional, October 28, 2011 "Wrestling Angels"10/27/2011 - My boys love to wrestle me. They create names like Captain Thunder and Tiger Ninja. Adrenaline peaking, they attack me with yells, a flurry of boy-energy and with hopes that this time—this time—they will take me down. I toss them for a while, even feigning desperation so as not to crush their dream prematurely. However, I eventually lock them in a stranglehold until they cry for mercy.
- Daily Devotional, October 26, 2011 "Bold As A Lion"10/25/2011 - William Seeker, a 17th-century clergyman, is quoted as saying, “Another singular action of a sanctified Christian is to prefer the duty he owes God to the danger he fears from man. Christians in all ages have prized their services above their safety. ‘The wicked flee when no man [is pursuing]; but the righteous are bold as a lion.’ ”
- Daily Devotional, October 25, 2011 "Wise Words"10/24/2011 - To continue working and ministering in Uganda through the nonprofit organization I launched in 2009 called Tukutana, I recently had to raise a considerable amount of funds in a short period of time. Amazingly—despite the struggling economy—after my need was shared by e-mail, the donations poured in and my entire quarterly goal was met in less than 48 hours!
- Daily Devotional, October 21, 2011 "Tale of Two Rich Men"10/20/2011 - Many of us are familiar with the story of Zacchaeus, the “wee little man” (as the Sunday school song goes) who climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus passing by. However, Luke sets Zacchaeus’ story in close context to the story of another rich man—a young and wealthy leader who visited Jesus.
- Daily Devotional, October 19, 2011 "Lasting"10/18/2011 - One summer when I was in elementary school, some of the neighborhood kids built a fort out of scrap wood. Precariously balanced on the ground, it consisted of three levels with enough room for two small bodies on each level. My dad, upon seeing their creation, promptly prohibited me from climbing in it as he was convinced it was an accident waiting to happen.
- Daily Devotional, October 18, 2011 "Didn't See It"10/17/2011 - When a certain member of our family lost his brother’s new iPod Touch—in our home—a cloud of disappointment and bewilderment filled the air for several days. (How can you lose an iPod in a house?) Prayers were sent up and theories abounded as we strived to find the costly gadget.
- Daily Devotional, October 14, 2011 "Online Attention"10/13/2011 - If you’re reading this devo online, in a few minutes you might move on to other websites. As you do, pay attention to what grabs your attention. What pics or words prompt you to pause for a second look? What links do you click on, and why?
- Daily Devotional, October 12, 2011 "Please Excuse Me"10/11/2011 - At the library, I noticed an elderly woman browsing in the large-print book section. She shuffled down the aisles with a walker, stopping frequently to drop a book into her bulging tote bag. Despite less-than perfect eyesight, limited mobility, and failing strength, she was hauling home a hoard of books! Any one of her limitations would have been an ample excuse for staying home.
- Daily Devotional, October 10, 2011 "My Three Sons"10/9/2011 - Okay, I admit the title of this devo is misleading. I don’t have sons. I am the proud father of three lovely girls! And by the grace of God, I strive to be the kind of parent God wants me to be. Now since I have raised only daughters, I’ve been told that my parenting expertise is restricted to raising girls.
- Daily Devotional, October 7, 2011 "Never Forgotten"10/6/2011 - One day, a taxi dropped world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma off at New York City’s Peninsula Hotel. But as the cab drove off, Yo-Yo realized he had left his cello in its backseat. It was worth 2.5 million dollars! The hotel staff jumped to action.
- Daily Devotional, October 5, 2011 "In The Arena"10/5/2011 - Theodore Roosevelt got things done. He was the driving force behind the completion of the ambitious Panama Canal project, won the Nobel Peace Prize, and served as Assistant Secretary of the US Navy.
