'First Love' - Acoustic Performance From Hillsong Young And Free
“This is all I want
That the love I have for you
Doesn't fade along with youth
Can You help with that?
The reason that I ask
I've seen far too many friends
Walk away and not come back
I want more than that…
Set me on fire like I've never known
I want to love You more as life goes on
So all of my days
I'll place my first love first again”
The words and music for ‘First Love’ were written by Benjamin Hastings, Aodhan King, and Ben Tan. The trio says that they started the framework for the song about 2 years. But it wasn’t until recently that they were able to make the song come together.
The band talks about how the main theme of the song is about seeing friends turn away from God as they grow up.
“When we were talking about where we should take this song lyrically, what’s the heart of this song, we ended up having this really good conversation about the earlier years of our youth,” says Ben Hastings.
“The prayers that we would pray were ‘God, set me on fire. I just want to have this passion for you.’ And then in the midst of that, growing up in church and seeing many friends who also prayed those prayers, they actually are not planted in church anymore and not in that same place with God.”
Ben explains that they wanted to write a song that would be an anthem to young people, as well as to themselves.
“God, I want to always be on fire for you. I want to always have this passion,” states Ben. “And then also, I want all these people that I’ve seen that use to have this passion and have walked away to find you again. Come back to their first love.”
The song ends with the lyrics “You'll see this world return, and your first love love You first.”
What a beautiful reminder that, through the redemptive work of Jesus, the world is gradually being redeemed back to Him. His first love is returning.
