1 Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There's power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you o'er evil a victory win?
There's wonderful power in the blood.

Chorus:
There is power, power, wonder-working power
In the blood of the Lamb.
There is power, power, wonder-working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

2 Would you be free from your passion and pride?
There's power in the blood, power in the blood;
Come for a cleansing to Calvary's tide;
There's wonderful power in the blood.[Chorus]

3 Would you be whiter, much whiter than snow?
There's power in the blood, power in the blood;
Sin stains are lost in its life giving flow;
There's wonderful power in the blood.[Chorus]

4 Would you do service for Jesus your King?
There's power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you live daily His praises to sing?
There's wonderful power in the blood.[Chorus]

“There Is Power in the Blood” was written by Lewis Edgar Jones during a camp meeting at Mountain Lake Park, Maryland. In that setting of earnest preaching and heartfelt singing, Jones was moved to reflect on the cleansing and victorious power found in Christ’s sacrifice. Out of that atmosphere of revival came both the words and music of the hymn, centered on the redeeming blood of Jesus.

The song was later purchased by hymn writer and publisher Henry Lake Gilmour and first appeared in Songs of Praise and Victory, a collection assembled in Philadelphia for the Pepper Publishing Company by Gilmour and William James Kirkpatrick. From its earliest publication, the hymn carried a clear evangelistic tone, asking direct questions about freedom from sin and pointing plainly to the answer found at the cross.

Throughout the 20th century, “There Is Power in the Blood” was included in numerous hymnals and became a staple in revival meetings and congregational worship. Its repeated refrain affirms a truth Christians have long confessed: that victory over sin, strength for daily living, and hope for eternity are found not in human effort, but in the precious blood of the Lamb. The hymn endures because it keeps the focus where it belongs: on the saving power of Jesus Christ.
