1 Jesus, keep me near the cross,
There a precious fountain;
Free to all, a healing stream,
Flows from Calv'ry's mountain.

Refrain:
In the cross, in the cross
Be my glory ever,
Till my ransomed soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.

2 Near the cross, a trembling soul,
Love and mercy found me;
There the Bright and Morning Star
Shed His beams around me. [Refrain]

3 Near the cross! O lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day
With its shadow o'er me. [Refrain]

4 Near the cross! I'll watch and wait,
Hoping, trusting ever;
Till I reach the golden strand,
Just beyond the river. [Refrain]

“Near the Cross” was born from a partnership between two faithful servants of the Church. Composer William Howard Doane first wrote the melody, setting it in a gentle 6/8 time in the key of F major. He then invited Fanny J. Crosby, the prolific hymn writer whose words have shaped generations of believers, to supply the lyrics. Crosby responded with a text that centers the heart of the Christian life where it belongs, at the foot of Christ’s cross.

Crosby’s hymn does not dwell on emotion alone, but on the spiritual refuge found in the Savior’s sacrifice. “Jesus, keep me near the cross” is both a prayer and a confession. The cross is described as a “precious fountain,” echoing the cleansing power of Christ’s atoning blood. In each stanza, Crosby moves from personal plea to confident hope, fixing her gaze on redemption, grace, and the promise of glory beyond the grave. The refrain lifts the believer’s eyes to “rest beyond the river,” pointing to eternal life secured by Jesus’ finished work.

Over time, “Near the Cross” has been translated into many languages, including German, Russian, Haitian Creole, and Spanish, carrying its message far beyond its 19th-century American origins. Its enduring strength lies in its simplicity and clarity. The hymn calls believers not to move past the cross, but to remain near it, finding in Christ’s sacrifice both daily strength and everlasting hope.
