He Hideth My Soul
Lisa Loraine Baker

"He Hideth My Soul" Hymn Lyrics
A wonderful Saviour is Jesus, my Lord.
A wonderful Saviour to me.
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock.
Where rivers of pleasure I see.
(Chorus)
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock
That shadows a dry, thirsty land.
He hideth my life in the depths of His love
And covers me there with His hand.
A wonderful Saviour is Jesus, my Lord
He taketh my burden away.
He holdeth me up, and I shall not be moved.
He giveth me strength as my day
(Chorus)
With numberless blessings each moment He crowns,
And, filled with His fullness divine,
I sing in my rapture, oh, glory to God
For such a Redeemer as mine!
(Chorus)
When clothed in His brightness.
Transported, I rise.
To meet Him in clouds of the sky.
His perfect salvation, His wonderful love.
I'll shout with the millions on high.
(Repeat Chorus twice)
The Story Behind "He Hideth My Soul"
Fanny Crosby had previously collaborated with composer, William J. Kirkpatrick, and during the time she and her husband lived near the Bowery, he (Kirkpatrick) contacted her about writing lyrics for a melody he had just composed. After he played the new composition for her, she prayed. That same day, she wrote and presented the lyrics to “He Hideth My Soul” to Kirkpatrick. Crosby’s lyrics for "He Hideth My Soul" are heartfelt, and they mirror her strong faith in the Lord. One glance at the lyrics will lead you to no less than fifteen Scripture passages that support what Fanny Crosby wrote.
The main passage referenced is Exodus 33:18-23, with an emphasis on verse 22, “and while My glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with My hand until I have passed by.” A second and just as important passage is Psalm 27:5, “For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will lift me high upon a rock.”
Other passages that contribute meaning to this hymn include:
Deuteronomy 33:25, Psalm 32:7, Psalm 61:1-4, Psalm 62:1-2, Psalm 100:4, Psalm 103:4, Psalm 118:24, Isaiah 9:6, Isaiah 32:1-2, Isaiah 51:16, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Hebrews 2:14-15, and 1 John 4:14.
Fanny Crosby's Legacy of Hymn-Writing and Faith
The words are just as relevant today as they were when Fanny Crosby wrote them 136 years ago. A very small portion of the hymns Fanny Crosby wrote include:
- Pass Me Not, Oh Gentle Savior
- To God be the Glory, Great Things He Hath Done
- Blessed Assurance
- Draw Me Nearer
- Safe in the Arms of Jesus
- All the Way My Savior Leads Me
As BibleStudyTools.com shares, “While best remembered for her hymns, her generosity and care for the dregs of society still challenge us today. She refused to let her blindness be anything other than a blessing from God. And when she died a month before her ninety-fifth birthday, she finally saw the face of her Savior, and knew Him ‘by the prints of the nails in his hands.’”
