Christ, Be Our Light
Peyton Garland

"Christ, Be Our Light" Lyrics
Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
light for the world to see.
Christ, be our light! shine in our hearts,
shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.
Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has pow’r to save us.
Make us your living voice.
Christ, be our light!
Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
shared until all are fed.
Christ, be our light!
Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone.
Christ, be our light!
Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come.
Christ, be our light!
The Story behind "Christ, Be Our Light"
Farrell is a British Catholic known for her liturgical compositions, but what makes "Christ, Be Our Light" significant is her personal plea in this song. Not only is Farrell a composer, but she is a community activist who recognizes the hardships and plagues of a fallen world as she serves those around her.
Farrell once served as an advisor to Bishop Victor Guazzellihas and worked firsthand as a sponsor and organizer for East London Communications Organisation (TELCO), which advocates for fair wages, health, and safety in local communities. She is also known for an immigration reform policy that she drafted, which was passed by the government. Additionally, she has served with various organizations to aid those fighting poverty, homelessness, and addiction.
First Verse Analysis
The opening line of this Advent hymn naturally reflects the heart behind many beloved Christmas hymns:
- "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," which says in verse six, “O come, O bright and Morning Star, and bring us comfort from afar! Dispel the shadows of the night and turn our darkness into light.”
- "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," which says in verse three, “Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings.”
- "O Little Town of Bethlehem," which says in verse one, “O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.”
Second Verse Analysis
Though the first verse opens with a rich history that reflects hymns of old, the last line of the second verse is a call to action for the modern church: “Christ, be our light! shine in your church gathered today.”
It’s a plea that God shine His light on His people, but specifically that He shine His light on His people gathered together.
This is a reminder to the Body that we must gather together to worship, encourage one another, and witness to our communities, affirmed by Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV): “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Third, Fourth, and Fifth Verse Analysis
The next three verses heavily reflect Farrell’s heart for serving others, as the lyrics directly imitate the needs she sees in her daily outreach. Through her work with the church and community organizations, she recognizes the need for Christ’s peace, which is rarely seen when politics, paychecks, and greed sneak into leadership and impact innocent community bystanders.
It’s a similar plea to what we see in the latter part of the first verse of "In Christ Alone," which says:
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when striving cease
My comforter, my all in all
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
The fifth verse holds what might be considered the most powerful lyrics in the song, saying, “Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed.” This reminds us of Communion, when Christ broke bread with His disciples, which served as a reminder that His body was broken for us (1 Corinthians 11:24).
Sixth Verse Analysis
The fifth verse’s call to mirror Christ’s brokenness leads us to the sixth verse, as it challenges us to put the needs of others above our own:
- “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” Romans 12:1 (ESV)
- “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.” Philippians 2:3-4 (NLT)
- “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (ESV)
Additional Versions and Resources
As a relatively younger hymn, we don’t see as many versions of "Christ, Be Our Light." However, there is a beautiful instrumental version by Steven C.
