Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christians
Your Nightly PrayerLord, Make Me Slow to Speak
August 6, 2025 ● 3 minShare this episode
Summer often brings more togetherness—a gift to treasure, but also a challenge. Without the structure of regular routines, tensions can rise more easily, and small irritations can quickly turn into regrettable moments. In this evening prayer and devotional, we look at James 1:19, which offers a three-fold approach for keeping peace:
-
Quick to listen: Slow down and truly hear before you speak.
-
Slow to speak: Weigh your words so they build up rather than tear down.
-
Slow to anger: Resist reactive responses that burn bridges.
When we practice these habits, we create space for more peaceful, loving interactions, even during the most hectic or unstructured days. And when we do falter, humility in apologizing restores connection and trust.
Today's Bible Verse: James 1:19 (NIV)
“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.”

🙏 Your Nightly Prayer
God,
As we spend more time together this summer, help us cultivate habits that will keep the peace in our homes. Please help me to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. When I mess up, give me the strength to apologize humbly. Please help me to savor the extra time spent with my loved ones this summer.
Amen.
🧘 Three Things to Meditate Upon
-
Being slow to anger happens best when our bodies are not stressed out. Practice calming your body with deep breathing—inhale for four seconds, exhale for six. Repeat.
-
How can you slow down to better listen to the people around you?
-
Practice a two-second pause tomorrow before responding in conversation so you can better choose your words.
