A Prayer to Steward Your Money Well
By Christine F. Perry

Bible Reading:
"The earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein." - Psalm 24:1 NKJV
“And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.” - Deuteronomy 8:18 NKJV

You would think that after numerous job changes, years of freelancing, and being let go, I would have trusted the Lord with my finances down pat, but I am human and stewarding the funds the Lord has given me is an area I need to ask for His help.

Just this morning, I was looking at the credit card statement. It was higher than normal due to having to pay for four new tires and TPMSs. However, the flesh always desires what is contrary to the Spirit (Galatians 5:17). I had just gotten paid, so I wanted to make sure my bills were paid first. As soon as I made a payment, I remembered I should have tithed first.

All throughout the Bible, it talks about giving our “first fruits” to God. Meaning we should give to Him first and then pay for everything else. I’ve noticed when I do that, I never feel strapped, but when that is out of order, I feel panicked as to whether I’ll have enough. Although I couldn’t change the order, I tithed after that.

Tithing is a constant heart check. It reveals in an instant where our hearts lay. If it’s a struggle to give, then our affections are elsewhere. Whenever we are quick to spend our funds, it is where our affections are. Matthew 6:21 says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

God doesn’t need our money. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10). But God loves us too much to allow us to be held captive by money and the pursuit of things that will not last. As you spend money this week, take note of where your money is going. It could be going to good places like your family, church, etc. However, it is not first going to God; those good things could be your idols.

Our hearts are prone to wander and prone to leave the God we love. May our treasure be in God and in building His kingdom and not our own.

Let's Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You are the Maker of heaven and earth. Thank You that You are a God of abundance and not scarcity. Everything we have is from You. Lord, please help us to live with an open hand and an obedient heart. Help us to make each financial decision with Your Kingdom in mind. Help us to live out Ecclesiastes 3:12, which says, “I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives.” Lord, help our lives to reflect Your goodness and generosity toward us. So that when people see our good works, they will glorify You in heaven (Matthew 5:16). Lord, we fall short every day. Please help us rely on You and be attentive to Your Spirit’s prompting as we steward our money.
I ask all this in Jesus' mighty name. Amen!

When money gets tight, it’s tempting to pull back instead of pressing in, but God calls us to trust Him first, not last. What might He be asking you to surrender financially right now? And how would your faith look different if you saw giving as worship, not just an obligation? Join the conversation on Crosswalk Forums!
