A Prayer to Spark God-Given Creativity
By: Whitney Hopler
Bible Reading:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” – James 1:5, NIV
Listen or Read Below:
Remember the last time you tried to write or plan something at work, but you were out of ideas? How about the last time you wanted to cook a creative dinner or build something new at home, but you were stuck creatively? It’s frustrating to be stuck creatively – especially when you need creative ideas quickly to solve a problem.
Thankfully, you don’t need to worry about being innovative all by yourself. When you need creative ideas but feel stuck, you have an open invitation to tap into the best source of inspiration. James 1:5 promises that if you lack wisdom, you can ask God for it and count on God giving it generously to you.
Wisdom is God’s guidance to know how to make the best decisions. God’s wisdom is the creative spark that helps you solve a logistical nightmare at the office, find a new way to connect with your teenager, or even figure out what to cook for dinner tonight.
When you ask God for wisdom, you’re essentially asking God for a glimpse into his creative process. Nature shows how God designed every intricate detail with unending creativity. From the fractal patterns of a snowflake to the complex rhythm of the human heart, every part of creation reveals that God is the Master Creator. God created everyone and everything with wonderful innovation. Who better to ask for creative ideas than God, the Master Creator?
So, why don’t you ask more often? Do you worry that God might be too busy running the cosmos to care about the problems you’re trying to solve creatively? Do you imagine God being annoyed that you’re bothering him to ask for help?
James 1:5 clears up concerns like those. It says God gives generously and without finding fault. He doesn’t think your problems are too small to help you solve. In fact, what matters to you, matters to God. Whatever you need creative ideas for day by day, you can ask God for help and count on God giving you inspiration.
It’s important to remember that God has made all people – including you – creative. Regardless of whether or not you’re artistic, you’re creative. You use your God-given creativity in many ways, in every single situation you encounter. You use it when you: brainstorm ways to save money on your monthly bills, organize a room at home to feel more peaceful, figure out how to speak the truth in love in a difficult conversation with a friend, and much more. Using your creativity is also an important way to contribute to the world in all the ways God wants you to do so.
When you start to view God as the Master Creator who is eager to share his ideas with you, you can see that your daily tasks are actually exciting opportunities to collaborate with God. You can ask God for the creative ideas you need anytime and anywhere. Just pray something like: “God, I’m stuck here. What’s a better way to do this?”
God will always answer your prayers. Sometimes God will put new creative ideas directly into your mind. But God’s answers might not come dramatically. Instead, God might answer by nudging you toward a different perspective, or by giving you a quiet sense of peace that allows your mind to relax enough for a new idea to surface.
But no matter how God chooses to answer, his promise in James 1:5 is clear: “it will be given to you.” That’s a guarantee. God loves to see you use the creativity he has given you as one of his beloved children. He loves to see you use your mind and your hands to bring order, beauty, and solutions into the world.
So, the next time you’re out of creative ideas, don’t settle for being stuck and frustrated. Don’t get discouraged, either. Instead, pray for help. Your Master Creator is ready to pour out a fresh batch of ideas. All you have to do is ask!
Let’s Pray:
Dear God, I’m feeling creatively stuck. I’ve reached the end of my own ideas, and I’m so grateful that your wisdom never ends. Please give me a fresh spark of creativity for all the situations I’m facing today – my projects, tasks, conversations, and more. Show me new ways to solve the problems I’m dealing with right now.
Please clear away the fog of stress and open my eyes to see new possibilities and solutions that I haven’t noticed before. Thank you for being a God who gives generously and never judges me for needing your help. I’m looking and listening for your creative ideas today, and I trust that you will generously give me exactly what I need.
Thank you, God. Amen.
