A Prayer to Reflect the Humble Heart of Jesus

Bible Reading:
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2:3-5)

There’s no pretty way to put this. I had a sin struggle that I wasn’t aware of for the longest time. And no surprise, because it’s a sneaky one. Pride. In hindsight, I see that for years I subconsciously believed I deserved certain opportunities, recognition, appreciation, or favor for something I had accomplished, learned, or excelled in. Or based on someone I had worked hard to be. It seems I was thinking a little too much of myself. Though I’ve known that humility is the God-honoring trait I ought always to aim for. And not only was I not fully harnessing that quality, but the weeds of pride in my heart were also blocking my ability to be truly humble as Jesus was and urges us to be. And I didn’t even know it.
Is there an area of your life where pride might be present? Where you feel like you deserve something? Maybe a shift in circumstances, more comfort or convenience, less struggle and suffering, more fair or favorable treatment? Let me also ask this: can you identify with whom or what situation you need a touch of humility?
Personally, sometimes still—even if I know I don’t deserve more favor, acceptance, and appreciation—my desire for a more esteemed and established placement is more prominent and present than it should be. Which is also prideful and definitely not very humble.
Being humble is a heart posture that says, “This isn’t about me.” What I’m experiencing, or not experiencing, isn’t about me. What someone else has that I don’t is not about me. What I’m doing today, the good that comes, the struggle that may surface. The children I have, the money I make. The house, my work, my gifts and talents. This life that I live. It’s not just about me.
Romans 11:36 says, For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.
For God, are all things. Not some things, but all things. Everything you possess, everything you do, everything he has allowed you to be, it’s about him—for him. His glory. Not ours.
Just like Jesus, who is our perfect model of humility. Who possessed no pride. Jesus lived his life to glorify the Father. Humbly giving up his comfort. Humbly putting everyone in his path, plus their needs and desires, above his own. And humbly carrying his cross to his death. Suffering for you and me, to give God glory. To point others to the Father.
Paul reminds us in Philippians 2:3-5 to do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.
How is your heart posture? Is there pride hiding within you that whispers, “I deserve something more?” To have more, to be more, or to live a more comfortable and easier life? Or is your life beginning to reflect more and more the humble heart of Jesus? A life that shows the sacrificial love of Christ. A humble heart of service before self, that displays to the world that he is at the center of what you do and all you are.
May it be our mission to let our lives humbly reflect, honor, and glorify Jesus—pointing people around us to him. Bringing our loved ones and all those the Lord places in our path to our King and Savior. And may we hold hope in the truth that, along with all of our brothers and sisters in Christ, someday we will be seated next to him in heaven and share in his glory.
Let’s Pray:
Lord Jesus, I long to have your pure and humble heart. But the truth is, pride so easily sneaks into my thoughts as the world whispers that I deserve a more comfortable, convenient life. At times, I start to believe I deserve superior status or treatment. But Lord, more than all of this, I desire the humility you modeled. I know this is your perfect way and plan, and it is in my humility, placing others before myself, and lowering my desires, that I honor you and reflect you.
You have freely given me your unconditional, nonstop love and my salvation. And that, Lord, is enough. I praise you that someday I will be seated next to you and share in your glory. How wonderful you are.
