Deaf Mother With Dementia Remembers Her Daughter

It was a tear-filled moment all caught on camera when this mother with dementia remembers her daughter. Dementia is a heartbreaking disease that strips someone of their memories. Our memories are what make up who we truly are and it's devastating to have those slip away. It's even harder to watch a loved one battle this disease. You see someone that you once knew so well lose their personality and spark. It can be so hard to weather this storm but there are moments that make all of the tough times worthwhile. This woman is sitting with her mother in the car. MJ’s mother is deaf and suffers from dementia. As they start to talk, using ASL, you can tell that the mother has no idea MJ is her relative. They go on to converse about their lives and that’s when MJ tells her that both of her parents are deaf and taught her sign language. MJ’s mother starts to ask questions about the girl’s family until finally, a light seems to click on and she remembers everything. She knows that MJ is her daughter and that she has another child too. They share this perfect moment where the memories are intact again and it’s enough to bring anyone to tears. And when MJ signs ‘You’re my mama!’ I need a whole box of tissues. This emotional video has touched hearts all over the Internet and it has been viewed over 9 million times. There is truly nothing that can break the bond between a mother and her child.

Dementia can be beautiful. Yesterday I took my mother for a ride to the beach. Taking her out of her element (my home, where she lives) can be confusing for her. Within the confusion there can be such beauty and sweet little surprises. I simply adore her. 💓
