Jimmy Stewart's Poem About His Dog Brings Johnny Carson To Tears
For decades, Jimmy Stewart graced our screens with award-winning movies like ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ and ‘The Philadelphia Story.’ His distinctive drawl and portrayal of relatable characters made Jimmy Stewart a beloved actor.
Some people may not know that Jimmy was also a talented writer and poet. In this classic clip from 1981, Jimmy appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. During the segment, Jimmy asked if he could read a poem about his dog, Beau.
“On the evening walks, and Gloria took him,
He was always first out the door.
The Old One and I brought up the rear
Because our bones were sore.”
At first, the poem is quite comical. You can hear the audience and host laughing out loud. But then, this touching piece about the golden retriever takes a more serious tone.
“And there are nights when I think I feel that stare
And I reach out my hand to stroke his hair,
But he's not there.
Oh, how I wish that wasn't so,
I'll always love a dog named Beau.”
If you have ever been a pet owner, you know that these special animals are near and dear to our hearts. They truly become a part of our family and when they leave this earth, the absence is felt. No wonder this beautiful poem brought Johnny Carson to tears. I’m wiping away a few myself.
