Young Bee Gees Cover Bob Dylan Classic 'Blowin' In The Wind'

Check out this clip of the Bee Gees—younger than most of us remember—as they sing Bob Dylan’s 1962 Classic “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

For many, when we think of the Bee Gees, we recall the video of the three long-haired and necklaced brothers strutting through the streets of a deserted and dilapidated city. They’re singing ‘Staying Alive.’ Barry’s full, fluffy hair blows in the breeze. Maurice wears a broad-collared shirt with the first few buttons undone, and twin Robin wears a black vest over an orange t-shirt. That’s the video we remember!

This one goes a little further back. While the familiar video was filmed in 1977, this clip is from an appearance that The BG’s made on Australian television on August 19, 1963! Born on the British Island Territory of Isle of Man, the family moved to Australia in 1958. Here, Barry was 16 years old, and his brothers were 13. Even at those young ages, their talent was evident

Robin sits at the rear, Maurice is in the middle, and Barry sits in front. The three are dressed in slacks, dress shirts, ties, and plaid vests. They wear BG pins on their chests. Originally, they were simply The BG’s, representative of Barry’s initials as well as two other friends, Bill Goode and Bill Gates. Later, the name evolved into the Bee Gees, as in the Brothers Gibb.

It really is fun to watch the young brothers. The age difference between Barry and his siblings seems significant at this stage of life, though it is only three years. Maurice seems to be the more serious of the twins, and Robin is more expressive. Their three voices blend perfectly!

There are over 800 comments regarding the video. Many people remark on the beautiful harmonies they produce. Several note Robin’s charisma and personality. And a great number expressed their sadness and sympathy for Mrs. Barbara Gibb; she outlived three of her four sons. Maurice, Robin, and Andy, the youngest of the Gibb brothers, died at the ages of 53, 62, and 30, respectively. Barry is now 77 and has been married to wife Linda Gray for nearly 54 years.

None of us know where life will lead, and surely, the Bee Gees had no idea where their lives would take them when they covered Bob Dylan’s song all those years ago. The Brothers Gibb went on to sell nearly 220 million records and win 10 Grammy Awards. We are blessed because that single song is just one of so many wonderful musical moments the group gave the world!

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12
