If you need to relay an important message to your spouse or significant other, how do you go about getting their attention? More than likely, you simply call out their name and then wait for them to acknowledge you in some form or fashion, right? Well, in Iowa, they take that action - something most people do without even thinking- to a whole other level.
During the Hawkeye State’s annual state fair, there is something called the Husband-Calling Contest. Now, you’re probably thinking, “what exactly is a husband-calling contest?” Well, it involves spouses calling out for their husbands in loud and unique ways.
A video compilation of the 2017 Husband Calling Contest has been going around on TikTok as of late. The 52-second video features the fifth, fourth and first-place finishers from the 2017 contest.
As the video shows, five women step up to the microphone and showcase their varied and odd ways of getting their husband’s attention.
The woman who finished in fourth place in 2017 manages to get her spouse’s attention by saying “yoo-hoo” over and over in a very sing-songy way.
The video shows also one of the women just screaming “Darrell” as loud as she can. However, 2017’s top-place finisher screams “Roy.” Shen also asks rhetorically, “can you hear me?” and then demands that her husband “get yourself right in here!”
The annual competition happens in August and features anywhere between 12 and 15 contestants competing for the big $5 prize, according to the Des Moines Register.
The Husband-Calling Contest is easily one of the more unique competitions you’re ever likely to see!
If your skillset is not made for the Husband-Calling Contest at the Iowa State Fair, have no fear. There is a contest for you! There is also a mom-calling and hog calling contest, according to the outlet.
1 Peter 3:7 “Likewise, you husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.”
