“Burning In My Soul” Devotional

By Lindsay Williams

“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams” (Acts 2:17, NIV)

There’s power in dreaming together. When God ignites a dream in our hearts, it’s a natural reaction to share it with others. That’s what happened in Acts 2. During Pentecost, God sent His Holy Spirit in like a rushing wind, and the effect was so powerful people began talking in their native languages. The experience was so astounding, the onlookers gathered thought these people were drunk!

In reality, these people were overwhelmed by the Spirit of God, and dreams were burning like fires in their hearts—dreams for their children, their communities and their nation.

God wants to do the same work in our midst today. We tend to limit God and set boundaries for Him when we plan our futures. However, He’s the one in control, and He desires to utterly wreck our expectations. While we’re busy thinking up man-sized plans, He’s orchestrating God-sized dreams. We just have to be available vessels through which He can breathe these unbelievable dreams to life.

Our definitions of happiness, success and blessing pale in comparison to the eternal gifts God wants to give us. The Bible says, “Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20, NLT).

The reality is we can’t accomplish anything of significance without the Holy Spirit, and we can’t achieve world-changing things without Him or the help of fellow believers. God’s plan has always been for us to achieve greatness together. The Church at large is interconnected. God gives us the gift of relationships so we can link arms in the greater story He’s writing.

The narrative in Acts 2 finds resolution in community. “All the believers were together and had everything in common… Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved” Acts 2:44, NIV).

God is giving you permission to dream big dreams. What’s burning in your soul?
