God sometimes uses our leaders to bring judgment on us. When the children of Israel demanded a king, God gave them Saul first. Was this to remind them how much better off they were when God was their only king? There are far more bad human rulers than good. God is the only one who is perfect and therefore above this kind of ridicule. Our government is not operating with God at its head like the Founding Fathers intended. They have strayed off the path established with God's direction. Much like the Israelites wandering the desert, we are wandering in a moral wasteland with our government leading the way. This is our time of testing. Will we humble ourselves and repent so God can lead us to the Promised Land? I'm not so sure, but with God, anything is possible. I was tempted to only post verse 14 here, but I think the entire context is applicable to our current situation: 2 Chronicles 7 (KJV) 12 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. 13 When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, 14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 15 Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. 16 For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually. 17 As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, and do according to all that I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and My judgments, 18 then I will establish the throne of your kingdom, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘You shall not fail to have a man as ruler in Israel.’ 19 “But if you turn away and forsake My statutes and My commandments which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods, and worship them, 20 then I will uproot them from My land which I have given them; and this house which I have sanctified for My name I will cast out of My sight, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples. 21 “And as for this house, which is exalted, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land and this house?’ 22 Then they will answer, ‘Because they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and embraced other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore He has brought all this calamity on them.’”

Louisa, The Bible clearly states that God places people in power. We must always remember that he knows the big picture and has a plan. We only see a small piece and many things don't make sense. But, He is also just, and those folks will get theirs eventually. It's just hard to watch it all happen, when we don't know the reason.

Pray for and support the righteous servant, and expose the evil of the unrighteous... or righteousness and peace will not prevail!

While God does place even unrighteous governments in power for his purposes (as noted in the passages from a different post: Romans 13:1-7 and 1 Peter 2:13-20), God does not forbid us from standing against them when they are ungodly, although we must nevertheless remain obedient in this context (read the verses mentioned). In America however, since our government has given us license and freedom of speech, as a government by the people, for the people, we are not in dishonor when we are critical of it's abuses.

Although God is sovereign , all powerful , and totally loving of us all. He has given us a free will. With that free will we the people of the United States have enacted laws that were put in place by the founding Fathers to establish that the government could not dictate to us our right to individual worship. Or mandate by law that we have to purchase certain goods. The elected officials of this nation are suppose to be a voice FOR the people, but have decided that we are too uninformed to make right decisions for what we want. So they put in to law a heath care plan that requires us to buy the government insurance. This is going to be over seen by the IRS. It is time we wake up and see what is really happening and stop blaming Gods sovereignty as an excuse to do nothing. I do not believe that the wealthy of our nation owe me some of their money. I need to get out and earn my own! Use my God given wisdom and create a business that will help to be the solution instead of waiting for a government handout or the wealthy to feel so threaten they will just turn over their millions. No one can stop us from crying out in prayer to the all powerful God for His help. That help may come in the form of information that will give us the opportunity to exercise our free will at the polls. We have an obligation to our children to research the candidates who are asking us to trust them with the security of each state and the collective nation. God will help us if we ask, but He is not obligated to choose our leaders. The people in the Bible wanted a king, because everyone else had one, they got a Saul. We wanted a black president and we too got a Saul. Skin color had nothing to do with the track record of this president before he was elected to office, it became the horse he rode in on. Again not Gods fault, we the people decided at the polls. Evil truly abounds when good men do nothing. May God give us wisdom and bless this nation with God fearing men who will do what they were elected to do, and truly be a voice FOR the people.

Mind you, I did not say God alone puts people in power, I actually said that God estabilshed a government system, Kings to rule , but they must FOLLOW God, to be a succsessful society. When the people followed the leader , that followed God, all was good. Not all leaders were, or are men that follow God.Its all there in the Bible. Of course if one chooses not to believe the Bible, then none of this makes any sense anyway.

Louisa May Anderson "If God chooses all governments then how did Hitler, Stalin, Mugabe etc. get into power?" The same way those governments that oppressed God's people in the Bible did -- by God's choice.

Donna Blevins Willard If you read the Old Testament, you will find that God had alot to do with creating government. It was Gods' hand that killed Goliath, the stepping stone that ultimately got a Shepherd boy Jonathans' throne. Kings, Judges, it's all there, and it is all the TRUTH.
