Lovely 'Precious Lord, Take My Hand' Duet Captivates
Listen to this captivating duet of the hymn ‘Precious Lord, Take My Hand.’
‘Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand,
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night,
Lead me on to the light’
What a beautiful cover of this lovely hymn! The woman singing the melody in this video is Angie Sutherland, and the other woman singing the harmony is her cousin, Heather. They sound so wonderful together!
“Got to visit my cousin Heather and her precious family,” writes Angie in the caption of her YouTube video. “I love my family so much. I have missed getting to sing with her. It seems like it’s been so long.”
Angie is from a small town in West Virginia, and she loves to praise the Lord. And when she shares her videos online, she uplifts and encourages those who watch them with her lovely covers of classic hymns.
“Oh, man. Praise the Lord. This blessed me,” comments one person online after watching the video on YouTube. “I know it's gonna bless others. Thank you, Ms. Heather and Ms. Angie.”
“You two harmonize superbly! Love it,” writes another person online.
As for ‘Precious Lord, Take My Hand,’ the author of this hymn was Thomas Andrew Dorsey. He was known as the “Father of Black Gospel Music” and combined African American church hymns such as those by Methodist minister Charles A. Tindley, with blues and jazz.
Although he had hundreds of jazz and blues songs to his credit, Dorsey turned to gospel music and wrote ‘Precious Lord, Take My Hand’ in Chicago in 1932 following the tragic death of his wife Nettie and infant son during childbirth. This is one hymn that has been recorded many times over the years by famous singers, including Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, Roy Rogers, and Tennessee Ernie Ford. President Lyndon B. Johnson even requested the hymn to be sung at his funeral.
