Prior to 1980, Mount St. Helen stood as the fifth tallest mountain in the state of Washington. The mountain had stood there in western Washington resisting the forces of nature for thousands of years. But even a mountain has its limits.
On Sunday, May 18, 1980, the old gal blew her top! The dormant volcano erupted. The eruption threw volcanic ash 80,000 feet into the air and deposited ash in 11 U.S. states. This was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States. The massive eruption reduced the elevation of the mountain's summit from 9,677 feet to 8,365 feet; replacing it with a 1 mile wide horseshoe-shaped crater.
This mountain is an object lesson we should take to heart. You might be as strong as the rock of Gibralter, but you have your limits.
