The Abbey of Sant Antimo, one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Italy, is located only 9 km from Montalcino. 781ad Charlemagne was returning from Rome ,In return for an end to an scourge, the Emperor promised to found the abbey. Later coming under the Benedictines, then successive Bishops, it was later abandoned for many many years, until revived in 1992 by the Canons Regular of St Augustine sons of St Norbert, come from France.
