'Cats In The Cradle' By Ricky Skaggs

Enjoy this great version of Ricky Skaggs singing ‘Cats In The Cradle,’ and notice how the scenes in the music video match so well with the descriptive lyrics in this song.

“My child arrived just the other day, he came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay, he learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say ‘I'm gonna be like you, dad, you know I'm gonna be like you’

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
‘When you coming home, dad?’ I don't know when
But we'll get together then, you know we'll have a good time then”

This song was originally released in 1974 by Harry Chapin. And Ricky does an incredible job covering this song in the video.

Ricky Skaggs is known as an American country and bluegrass singer, musician, producer, and composer. He primarily plays the mandolin, but also likes to play the fiddle, guitar, and banjo. In 2016, Ricky was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, and in 2018 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Many of Ricky’s fans really enjoy his version of this song and the meaning that is put behind the words.

“Ricky Skaggs version really tells a story of the lives of many of us who had hard working Dads but somehow they were there - yet absent in so many ways!” writes one person on YouTube.

“You want the best for your child, so you work hard to provide it to them,” comments another person on YouTube. “You want them to have things you didn't have growing up, but it's a tradeoff, cost you quality time together. It's a vicious cycle that is only realized when you're older.”

This classic song helps remind us to prioritize what’s important, the loved ones in our lives. Because time goes by so quickly and we need to cherish the moments together that we still have.
