According to The Associated Press, dozens of Muslim residents threw firebombs and rocks at police as they tried to storm a church in southern Egypt in search of a woman suspected of converting to Christianity. Clashes between Copts and Muslims usually are sparked by disputes over rumors of conversion, Muslim-Christian romantic relationships, and the construction of churches. Violence between Egypt's Christians and Muslims has risen in the past two years in the wake of the country's uprising that weakened security across the nation. Egypt's Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of the country's 85 million people, have long complained of discrimination by the state.
