Derek Hough Honors Dick Van Dyke With 'Step In Time' Dance Number

Who’s ready to reminisce about their childhood days when Mary Poppins was on the tube? I certainly am-- especially after watching this incredible performance.

In less than forty seconds, you’ll find a grin on your face while your toes tap to the tune as Derek Hough honors Dick Van Dyke with ‘Step In Time’ dance number.

Does that number sound familiar? It should—it’s one of the most famous scenes in Mary Poppins when Bert, the ‘old chimney sweep,’ takes the family on a mini-adventure while sweeping the chimneys of London. But this is where this video gets even better—Derek Hough honors Dick Van Dyke for this famous number when he dresses as a chimney sweep and pirouettes his way across the Kennedy Center with a crew of chimney sweepers!

Derek is known for his legendary dancing through Dancing with The Stars, is a six-time Mirrorball Trophy winner, and a two-time Emmy winner. His accolades and love of dancing made him the perfect guy to step to the tune of Chimney Sweep. You can tell by the look on his face that he is in his element when the music starts! Derek and his crew of dancers even dressed like Bert from the movie. What isn’t there to love about this video?

This performance was the first at the Kennedy Center after COVID shut the whole nation down—including theater performances. Something we all truly missed during our time of sheltering in place. The Kennedy Center Honors is traditionally held in December of each year, but this year it was postponed to May of 2021. Recipients to be honored alongside Dick Van Dyke included Debbie Allen, Joan Boaz, Garth Brooks, and violinist Midori. But none can compare to the love we have for our favorite chimney sweep.

As they dance their way across the patio outside the Kennedy Center it makes me thank God for the creative gifts he’s given Dick Van Dyke, Derek, and each one of us. What an incredibly expressionless world would we live in without the gifts of music, dancing, and acting!

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
