Steps

THE STORY


The story opens with a White family going through a divorce. The wife leaves her daughter and husband. No reason is given or blame assigned, here.

Scene 2 is a car accident. A Black family is torn apart when the Husband & Father is killed. The small boy is critically injured, and the Surviving Wife & Mother fears she will lose all. But, the son lives, and they must struggle on together.

We don't investigate either situation in depth.

Scene 3 is at a playground. Duh. (^_-) The viewer can decide for themselves why the mother pulls her children off the see-saw. The children from the previously viewed families get along well, for being strangers. As dusk approaches, the rest of the parents come to retrieve their children. Last are our 2 single parents, and it is Love at 1st sight.

Their thoughts are played out as the other characters remain frozen. The man, though smitten, can't help but look back at what he thought he had before. The woman knows this new Love is right, and helps him close the door (his eyelids, in this case ;o) on that chapter of his life. She gently moves him to release that longing and focus on their budding relationship.

The choreography moves through the courtship, proposal and marriage rather quickly. As the newlyweds speed off to their honeymoon, the children are left with some unseen relative, and continue to play amicably.

Upon the return of the parents, however, the children now receive some rejection from their friends that they don't quite understand. They know it hurts, however, and have no one to vent their hurt at except each other. This, of course, causes strain between the parents, who find that they also are receiving fresh rejection from society at large. They understand fully what is going on.

The kids, meanwhile, have made up and have not yet ingrained the strain--once again treating each other civilly. The adults were choreographed to represent the
