Who bore our punishment on the cross - Part 1 of 2
Oh the glory of the cross. The paradox is profound. The King of kings mocked with robe & crown, the Judge of the world convicted in a kangaroo-court, the Creator crucified by his creation. Sir John Bowring puts it well,
In the cross of Christ I glory,
Towering over the wrecks of time;
All the light of sacred story
Gathers around its head sublime.
His last stanza reaches the climax:
When the woes of life over take me,
Hopes deceive, and fear annoy,
Never shall the cross forsake me:
Lo! It glows with peace and joy.
