Death toll from typhoon passes 500 in the Philippines (Second Coming Watch Update #281)

1. According to The Associated Press, Rescuers were digging through mud and debris to retrieve more bodies strewn across a farming valley in the southern Philippines by a powerful typhoon. The death toll from the storm has surpassed 500, with more than 400 people missing. More than 310,000 people have lost their homes since Typhoon Bopha struck and are crowded inside evacuation centers or staying with their relatives, relying on food and emergency supplies being rushed in by government agencies and aid groups.

2. According to The Times of Israel, the United States, along with several key allies, is prepared to launch a military intervention in Syria should the Assad government resort to using its chemical weapons against the rebels. A military source told the Times that U.S. forces could be ready “rapidly, within days,” if Syrian chemical weapons were activated, and implied that the necessary forces were already in the region.

3. According to Reuters, an earthquake measuring 5.5 in magnitude struck eastern Iran, killing eight people and injuring 12 others. Emergency teams scrambled to rescue others and treat the injured. People fled their homes as the quake struck and brought walls and buildings down. But others were left trapped under rubble in villages across the district of Zohan.
