Glen Campbell Performs His Classic 'Rhinestone Cowboy'

Isn’t it nice to get a little blast from the past every now and then? Glen Campbell’s "Rhinestone Cowboy" is one of those old songs with wonderful lyrics that no one can forget. Even in 2026, it still impresses. Some of the lyrics to “Rhinestone Cowboy” are:

It may surprise you to find out that Glen actually didn’t write “Rhinestone Cowboy,” even though he sings it with such ownership and charisma. It was originally written and recorded by Larry Weiss. 

Glen had heard the song while he was on tour overseas, and listened to it over and over. He told one of the people at his label, Al Khoury, he’d found the perfect song to record. Al told him he did, too. They both were thinking of the same song: “Rhinestone Cowboy.”

Larry had gotten inspiration when he heard the phrase “rhinestone cowboy” in a conversation. 

"I heard the phrase and thought, 'Boy, I like that title'. I put my own meaning to it and wrote the song. I'll always be a kid at heart, and 'Rhinestone Cowboy' was sort of a summation of all my childhood cowboy movie heroes - particularly Hopalong Cassidy,” he said. 

It became Glen’s favorite song he had ever sung–his signature song. 

Glen Campbell’s "Rhinestone Cowboy" is one of those songs that will always sound best when he sang it. He related deeply with the lyrics, and he’ll always be the true Rhinestone Cowboy.
