Why This Phrase Led to a Big Fight Between Nate Bargatze and His Wife

This one, often-used phrase led to a big fight between Nate Bargatze and his wife. The popular and incredibly funny comedian explained why his wife's continual use of a phrase we’ve all heard many times caused such a big blowup between the two of them. Watch the short but hysterical clip to hear what the phrase was and to hear Nate explain the course of events that followed.

Language, and the words we use, are powerful. Through words, we can make people feel certain emotions, move them to act in particular ways and even force them to reconsider what they think and believe on this or that subject. What we say and do matters, and as you’ve probably found out, those words hold a large amount of power.

Now, in everyday conversations, humans have invented several short, concise and witty sayings to express certain ideas and actions. More than likely, you’re familiar with many of these colloquialisms, and probably even use some of them regularly when conversing with family, friends or coworkers.

In a clip posted on YouTube, Nate mentioned how “in one fell swoop” caused a massive fight between him and his wife. During a conversation, he said she repeated it over and over, making it seem like she had heard about it and wanted to try it on, to see how it felt. But as they continued talking, Nate questioned whether she really understood what “one fell swoop” meant. As any man knows, that wasn’t a smart move on his part.

“And so, I just, like, waited, and she didn’t say anything,” he said. “And I just go, ‘That’s not what ‘one fell swoop means.’ And instead of possibly just being wrong, she goes, ‘I know what one fell swoop means.’ I go, ‘Yeah, it doesn’t sound like you do, all right?’”

That conversation and fight made the rest of the night tense and awkward.

Genesis 2:24 “For this cause will a man go away from his father and his mother and be joined to his wife; and they will be one flesh.”
