Coptic Orphans: Serve to Learn Program PART 1 of 2

Serve to Learn is a unique opportunity that allows volunteers to serve in high-poverty areas of Egypt by volunteering to teach a dynamic English summer course to children. Volunteers come not only to teach the children English (and have fun doing it), but also that the volunteers themselves will learn even more from the children they serve. As one volunteer from the 2003 program so aptly put it, “we went to teach, but in the end, it was we who learned.” rnrnThe typical day for a Serve to Learn volunteer begins with a morning session devoted to English classes for orphans that are in the Coptic Orphans’ Not Alone program. The afternoon session offers classes for all other interested children in the community. In the evening, volunteers visit the homes of orphaned children to develop closer relationships with them and to gain a fuller understanding of the poverty in which so many children in Egypt live. rnrnThe volunteers are asked to think creatively about how to teach English to the children. Their purpose is to nurture a more positive learning environment for the children and inspire a love of learning within them. This is an opportunity not only for Egyptian children, who start learning English from the first grade, to learn English from a native speaker, but to have an enjoyable classroom experience that they do not always have during the academic year.
