Visiting a church for the first time can be daunting and overwhelming. Even for people who have grown up in the church, visiting another one for the first time can and does give many people a lot of anxiety. That’s why it’s always a good idea to approach new people cautiously, not immediately hover and crowd around them. Give people a chance to breathe and get acclimated to their surroundings before bombarding them with handshakes and hugs.

However, you also want to be welcoming and friendly and not come off as cold and uncaring. So, a delicate balance must be struck in these types of situations. That is likely part of the reason why many churches have greeters – a smiling face and a handshake as you enter the house of worship. However, as Tim points out in a hilarious clip posted on social media, even this simple interaction can go wrong.

“My church, they have these two hand sanitizer stations right by the front-door greeters,” he said. “That is not a good message.”

He then acts out a scenario in which a church greeter welcomes a new family as they enter the church. During the conversation and as the greeter learns more about the new family, the greeter covers themselves in more and more hand sanitizer. Their words sound welcoming and friendly, but the greeter’s actions say something else.

So, you can see why putting a hand sanitizing station by church greeters might send a wrong and unintended message to members of the congregation.
