‘You Can Call Me Al’ Transformed into Jazzy 1920s Throwback You Have to Hear

Oh my! You have to hear this! ‘You Can All Me Al’ was transformed into a Jazzy 1920s throwback you have to hear.  I was folding laundry, sipping lukewarm coffee (when is it ever warm these days), the usual symphony of my Monday morning, when suddenly—bam!—this jazzy, toe-tapping, cheeky little tune floated through the speakers like a whisper from the Roaring Twenties, and I dropped the socks and just listened and watched. Robyn Adele Anderson, in all the vintage glory of her outfit, took Paul Simon’s ‘You Can Call Me Al’ and wrapped it in a flapper dress and feathered headband. And mercy, it sings.

You know that feeling when something old and something new shake hands and waltz through your kitchen? That’s what this cover is. A playful throwback to a time when jazz ruled the airwaves and joy was worn like pearls around your neck. Robyn’s voice—bright, sassy, laced with just enough mischief—steps into the lyrics like they were meant to be crooned under a golden spotlight in a smoky speakeasy.

The horns? Swanky. The rhythm? Irresistible. The vibe? Like a Charleston party broke out in the middle of your Wednesday, and you’re just lucky enough to be invited.

She sings “If you’ll be my bodyguard, I can be your long-lost pal,” and suddenly you’re dancing around with a dish towel, grinning like someone who’s never known a bad day. That’s the thing about music like this—it sneaks in, warms your bones, and makes the ordinary feel like a celebration.

Robyn apparently has this uncanny gift of taking what we thought we knew and dressing it in charm and sparkle. She turns nostalgia into something brand new. And honestly? In a world that feels heavy some days, this song is a light thing. A fun thing. A reminder that joy can still catch us by surprise, even if it's in the form of a jazzy bass line and a wink from a YouTube video.

So yes, go listen. Right now!  Dance in your socks. Smile till your cheeks hurt. And thank the good Lord for artists like Robyn, who give us reasons to feel a little more alive in the middle of our beautifully ordinary lives.

Psalm 28:7 “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.”
