The legendary video game character Sonic races back into action in the "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" official trailer.

Over the years, many fictional characters have been created that have become beloved and even revered by the masses. They are figures that will forever live on in the imaginations of future generations. Scooby Doo, Kermit the Frog, Darth Vader, Fred Flintstone, Charlie Brown and Willy Wonka are just a few of those particular characters.

However, as beloved and iconic as those creations mentioned above are, some might argue that there is an even more special, more revered class of character. How could anyone top perhaps the most widely known and reviled villain of all time (Darth Vader)? Well, what about those who are known simply by one name? People immediately understand who you're referencing by saying Homer, Mickey or Gandalf. While these characters may have multiple names, one is all that is usually needed.

Sonic, the lightning-fast video game hedgehog, is another character so well-known that one name is all that is needed to identify the SEGA creation. He has even spawned two very popular films, and, as a clip posted on YouTube shows, there is now a third.

The beloved character returns in the official trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” The film pits Sonic and his buddies, Tails and Knuckles, against a powerful new villain, Shadow. It appears that Sonic and his two buddies might have met their match.

But instead of saving it for the movie-going experience, the trailer gives it away, showing that the trio reaches out to and teams up with an unlikely character. They join forces with the evil Dr. Robotnik, hoping he can assist in their fight against this latest villain.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" hits theaters on Dec. 20 and features Jim Carrey in his return as Dr. Robotnik and the voice of Keanu Reeves.
